Iceland is rich in natural beauty and is even host to one of the Wonders of the World, the Gullfoss Waterfall. The Northern Lights are one of these natural beauties that the Land of Fire and Ice has to offer. So just what exactly are the Northern Lights?

What are the Northern Lights?

The Northern Lights, AKA Aurora Borealis , is a natural light display seen during the Winter months, most clearly seen at night against a dark sky above Iceland and across the Arctic areas.

Aurora Borealis was named after the Roman goddess of dawn, Aurora, and the Greek name for the north wind, Boreas.

T he Northern Lights are formed by particles emitted by the sun during solar explosions. When these particles interact with the atmosphere in the Earth's magnetic field, energy is released, causing these peculiar luminous green streaks across the skies.
