The Best of Icelandic Design

Ásgeir Fannar Ásgeirsson • Mar 06, 2015

Iceland is a cultural and creative country, home to many brilliant artists, designers, musicians, architects and more. This month we have DesignMarch to look forward to.

It takes place in the most Northerly capital in the World, Reykjavik, from March 12th to 15th, and is full of creative inspiration for you to get your teeth into.

Here’s a taster of what to expect:

DesignTalks

Each year the opening of DesignMarch begins with DesignTalks in Harpa Concert Hall. This year DesignTalks are curated by the Icelandic designer, Hlín Helga Guðlaugsdóttir, who is a teacher at Konstfack University College of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm.

DesignTalks is described as an “inspiring day of talks for anyone interested in design and architecture, and a must for all creative professionals.”  - DesignMarch.is

We guarantee you will be inspired and amazed by the creativity of the speakers and designers at this years DesignTalks.

Location Location Location

There are many exhibitions and shows dedicated to DesignMarch over the 4 days of the event. Here is a few of the locations not to be missed:

Kraum

Kraum is a fabulous design house located in Aðalstræti, in downtown Reykjavik. Kraum was first built in the 18th Century and is one of the oldest buildings in the city. Skúli Magnússon, a very successful entrepreneur and one time governor of the City, first built this house as a clothing factory and it holds the tradition today of being the creative design hub of Reykjavik.

30 designers reside in Kraum and host their clothing for men, women & children, handmade jewellery, designer furniture, ceramic designs, hand-crafted and artist-created gifts and various other nik naks. This is a “one-stop shop for designer items.” - landogsaga.is

Museum of Design and Applied Art

The Museum of Design and Applied Art is located near the city centre in a borough called Garðabær. This is one of the must see places of DesignMarch. These exhibitions range from graphic design to product design and design history.

SPARK Design Space

SPARK is Iceland’s only design gallery. This year the displays for DesignMarch hosted in SPARK has a main emphasis on food design, and hosts work from both local and international designers. SPARK gallery is also home to a design shop and plays a major role as a host to design events.

Reykjavik Art Museum

The Reykjavik Art Museum was founded in 1973 and operates in a converted harbour warehouse. During the renovation of the building, the renovation managers wanted to preserve as much of the buildings original architecture as possible.

“The outcome is a beautiful, minimal space that gives a striking backdrop to the concerts.” - blog.icelanddesign.is

Hrím

As seen on blog.icelanddesign.is, this is another great example of Icelandic design. Hrím Hönnunarhús features a wide range of accessories, decorations and furniture.
