We’ve talked about the Northern Lights many times here on TripCreator, as it is one of Iceland's greatest treasures.

The Aurora Borealis is seen in the dark Winter Months over Iceland, best seen outside of the Capital City, Reykjavik. Although if the setting is just right, the Northern Lights might shine through even there.

Here are the best places to view the Northern Lights:

Aurora Forecast from the Icelandic Met Office - A great place to start your journey. Here you can see a prediction of the likelihood of seeing the Northern Lights on your trip to Iceland.

Aurora Northern Lights Centre - The first thing to do when you want to start your Northern Lights adventure is to visit the Aurora Northern Lights Centre in Reykjavik. ‘It acts as an invaluable preparation tool for chasers of the Northern lights during the winter’ - reykjavik.com

Northern Lights Bar - This bar is part of the Ion Luxury Adventure Hotel and is a great viewing point for the Northern Lights in comfort. It has floor-to-ceiling windows and they have two astronomers at hand for the guests that want a tutorial.

Hótel Flúðir - This is known as an excellent place for viewing Northern Lights. It even has two Jacuzzis! It is located in South of the country, just an hour away from Reykjavik.

Grótta Tidal Island - When the Northen Lights are dancing over Reykjavik, Grótta is the best place to view them. Only a 10 minute drive from Reykjavik city centre, Grótta is a popular recreational area with no light posts so you have a better view of the Aurora. Also, Grótta offers an interesting warm footbath where you can dip your feet while gazing at the sky.

Rent a 4x4 and self drive - Rent a 4x4 and drive into the Icelandic countryside to chase the Northern lights.

Northern Lights Tour - Book into a guided tour to chase the Northern Lights. This begins in the Capital, Reykjavik, and you will be treated to a guide around the capital area to view the spectacular lights.
