5 Icelandic Adventures for Your Bucket List

Iceland is full of wonders, a land still evolving amidst ice and fire, with unmissable sights at every turn. Befitting the landscape, this is also a place of adventure and romance. There is so much to do in this fantastic country it is difficult to choose one experience over another, but here are my five must-see, must-do activities:
Strokkur Geysir Iceland
Tour The Golden Circle
This day-long tour takes in the ‘big three’ of Þingvellir, Geysir and Gullfoss. The first marks where the tectonic plates of America and Eurasia separate to form a geological no man’s land. Geysir is the original hot spring from which all others take their name, while Gullfoss is a simply breathtaking waterfall. Each is a wonder, but you can see all three in one day – perfect for a short break.
Blue Lagoon Iceland

Relax at the Blue Lagoon

Those looking for a luxury spa break will be thrilled to see thermal pools all over Iceland, but this is the most iconic. In a volcanic landscape lies this large pool where crystallised minerals have turned the water milky blue. The 36C water, the skin-cleansing minerals and the treatments on offer will leave you feeling relaxed in surreal surroundings.

Take to the air

Iceland’s landscape is magnificent, and to see it from above is an unforgettable experience. From Akureyri, take a tour in a small aircraft over lava fields and craters, see the spectacular Goðafoss waterfall and the stunning Lake Mývatn, an expanse of shallow waters and islands dotted with bizarre lava sculptures.

See a Whale

Iceland’s coasts are frequented by huge numbers of whales, including blue and fin, minke, humpback and orca, with boat tours in late summer boasting a 98% sighting rate. Húsavík in the north has been termed the whale watching capital of Europe by the WWF, but Reykjavík is also a great place to sight these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat.

Northern Lights Iceland
Look to the skies
Between October and March, Iceland enjoys great views of the Aurora Borealis, or Northern Lights, a magical display of colours caused by solar particles hitting the Earth’s magnetic field. Take a tour to the dark interior and watch in awe as the universe puts on a stellar display to take your breath away.
